Climate change is one of the biggest threats to life on our planet. At the glaciers of the Arctic and Antarctica we can see the ice melting year by year. Most people agree on the causes of climate change and know what needs to be done to slow it down. It calls for broad political will and strength where short-term interests are not put first.
I lived in Greenland for sometime a few years ago, I traveled with inuits to many glasiers and after hearing how thay talked about the glasiers retriving I felt compeld to doing a series deticated to the glasiers and the ice of Greenland.
The exhibition Icescapes shows the beautiful nature of Greenland but at the same time is a true reminder of what is happening to our planet.
Ásgeir Pétursson
The Arctic is mysterious and majestic; powerful through the scale of glaciers and mountains; playful in the miniature of reflecting waters and melting ice.
In his magnificent photographs, Ásgeir Pétursson invites us to become Arctic observers; reminds us of how the force of iceblocks falling into oceans is a warning; the lonely bird signaling changes in the climate.
The photographs show new rivers and lakes emerging in the vast glacial landscape; in their beauty a call to action; marking the time before it is too late.
The Arctic Circle Assembly is honored to host this exhibition and also welcomes the work of others who display their art and insight. By bringing exhibitions into Harpa, the days of the Assembly gain a new dimension.
